The Documentary
Mentally Al is an intimate portrait of underground cult comedy legend Al Lubel, a man many consider to be the greatest comic you’ve never heard of. A former Star Search champion who has appeared many times on the likes of Carson, Leno and Letterman, Al is now in his 60s, perpetually broke, couch surfing in friends' apartments, and struggling for stage time.
A true enigma in the stand up comedy world, many famous comedians consider Al to be an underappreciated genius, but many also believe him to be the poster child for self-destructive neurosis. Is he an overlooked Van Gogh of standup comedy? Or just another example of exceptional talent ruined by personal demons? And why have you never heard the name Al Lubel before? Perhaps because that’s what Al has always wanted most: to become famous for being the guy that should've become famous. One thing is certain: after watching, you will never forget the name Al Lubel.
Featuring interviews with comedians like Judd Apatow, Kevin Nealon and Sarah Silverman, Mentally Al is a complex and hilarious meditation on the creative mind and how we choose to define success, as well as a unique examination of how to turn personal tragedy into revolutionary comedy.
